Healthcare
Healthcare is an important topic for Latinos. Many of us grew up in multigenerational homes where at least one person needed caregiving. Many Latinas do all or most of the caregiving for at least one relative, and many of us live in Latino-populated states like Florida and Texas that have yet to expand Medicaid, which many of our parents and abuelos depend on. In addition to access to reproductive healthcare, mental health among Latinos is a rising concern as cultural stigmas and access to affordable care prevent us from seeking help when we need it. A lack of in-language, culturally appropriate healthcare and the rising cost of insurance and prescription drugs are also top-of-mind issues for our people.
HOW THIS ISSUE IMPACTS YOU: More than half of all Latinos don’t have access to sick leave at their jobs. This means we don’t get paid for time off when we’re sick, or when a child, parent, or other relative is sick and needs our help.
DID YOU KNOW? Nearly 11 million Latinos lack any form of health coverage.
